Effective throughcare and resettlement are critical to achieving and sustaining improved outcomes for young people in custody. It is important that when young people are released, resettlement activities complement the improved services delivered within custody. Resettlement and Aftercare Provision (RAP) has been established in 50 YOT areas that are also Drug Interventions Programme (DIP) high-custody areas. This resource, which is attached to YOTs:

  • engages young people with substance misuse problems, in custody and the community
  • provides a high level of support during the community part of their Detention and Training Order
  • provides up to six months’ support after their sentence.

The core RAP provision provides up to 25 hours of planned support and activities each week, on a voluntary basis, including:

  • ongoing access to substance misuse and mental health treatment
  • support to access accommodation
  • education training and employment
  • positive use of leisure time
  • peer and family support work
  • RAP started in October 2004 and will provide a significant extra component to the end-to-end provision being piloted by DIP and YOTs in addressing substance misuse.
