A SafetyNet for the borough
The police, the Council and other agencies across the borough who are involved in making the borough safer all work together in a partnership that we call ‘SafetyNet’.
They all work together to cut crime and tackle anti-social behaviour.
Priorities for the coming year
SafetyNet has developed the following priorities for the forthcoming year by listening to what residents told us are important to them.
This year we are focussing on early intervention, reducing re-offending and working at a neighbourhood level. We will all be working hard to, deliver a safer borough for everyone in Waltham Forest.
Reducing drug and alcohol related harm
Drugs and alcohol misuse has a devastating impact on the health and lives of individuals, families and communities, and is a significant cause of crime. We have commissioned two new drug treatment services for people with drug and alcohol problems, which will help to reduce drug and alcohol related harm.
Reducing youth violence (robbery, guns, knives, gangs)
We know that our young people are concerned about gangs. We will be working to disrupt gang activities helping to reduce young people’s fear of crime.
Reducing burglary and car crime
Having a car or other vehicle broken into or vandalised is one of the major concerns for residents. We are working to reduce the numbers of offences committed.
Reducing domestic violence
Domestic violence is a crime and it involves threats, or the use of physical force against a partner or ex partner. It damages vulnerable children and young people involved.
High repeat rates are a problem with domestic violence. In tackling domestic violence we will also be targeting violent crime and alcohol abuse, as evidence shows a significant proportion of domestic violence incidents are fuelled by alcohol.
Reducing anti-social behaviour
Anti-social behaviour (often known as ASB) ranges from serious acts of crime to selfish and unacceptable activity, which causes annoyance and interference.
We know that nuisance neighbours, fly tipping and littering are resident’s main concerns. We will continue to tackle ASB through effective enforcement and early intervention programmes.
Preventing violent extremism
We are working to:
- Make sure we support strong communities
- Prevent extremism
- Help make everyone feel they belong in Waltham Forest.
Reducing hate crime
Being a victim of this kind of crime can be a particularly hurtful and a frightening experience as you have been targeted because of your personal identity, or because of who your attacker(s) has perceived you to be. Part of our ongoing work in tacking hate crime will include encouraging more people to report hate crime and working with the police to bring perpetrators of hate crime to justice.
