Waltham Forest Council’s street wardens work to help prevent crime and to make you feel safer. They allow you to raise concerns about safety and environment issues such as fly tipping, graffiti and rubbish dumping or you can ask them for help or advice.
Streets ahead
Following a review of enforcement services across the borough the street wardens will be given the additional role to issue fixed penalty notices for graffiti, littering or dog fouling. This initially ran as a pilot scheme in Walthamstow from December 2007 to March 2008, and will be introduced into all schemes as a core function from June 2008.
The initiative will see the wardens continue their crime prevention and community engagement work but they will also have the power to intervene if they see an environmental offence being committed.
Making your streets cleaner, safer and a better place to live
Street wardens are an important point of contact with the police and work with organisations within communities such as schools or faith groups to help tackle environmental problems. They patrol the streets from Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm and Saturday 10am to 6pm.
The street warden service aims to:
- Reduce anti-social behaviour and environmental crime
- Act as a visible presence on the streets
- Build strong community relations
- Provide positive activities for young people
- Work with vulnerable people

The police and wardens
The wardens are not an alternative to the police. Neither do they have the same powers as the police. If you see a crime - or are unfortunate enough to be the victim of a crime - please contact the police on 999.
