Domestic violence is a crime

Domestic violence is any violence or threat of violence that takes place in or outside the home between family and household members or partners in existing or previous relationships.

It can be physical, emotional, sexual and financial abuse. It can occur to anyone irrespective of gender, age, ethnicity, social status, religion and disability.

If you are experiencing domestic violence, you may feel unable to ask for help or take control of the situation.

Domestic violence occurs in all social classes, gender, cultures, age groups, disabled people, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) relationships. Men too can be victims of domestic violence.

Are you a male perpetrator wanting to stop your abusive behaviour?

Waltham Forest alongside Newham and Barking and Dagenham Councils is part of a  north London initiative working to tackle the root causes of domestic violence.

The domestic violence intervention project works by educating abusers to help them change their behaviour and protect their families.

Perpetrators are assessed, and if suitable, begin a 32 week programme designed to help them understand how their behaviour affects their partners, ex-partners and children. It also teaches them to be aware of their anger, recognise the signs that build up to violence and how violence in relationships is used to gain power and control.

The initiative is part of Waltham Forest Council's commitment to tackling domestic violence.

Self referrals can be made by calling the East London Domestic Violence Intervention Project on 020 8555 8979.
