Design and crime

It is now widely recognised that there is a link between design and crime, and that careful attention to the planning of towns and to the design of estates and individual buildings can help to reduce crime.

Secured by Design  is the UK Police flagship initiative supporting the principles of 'designing out crime' by use of effective crime prevention and security standards for a range of applications.

Waltham Forest's Community Safety team are working closely with police crime prevention officers to ensure that schools are advised on Secured by Design principles, car parks in the borough receive Secured by Design status, and that Secured by Design principles are integrated into the borough policy for the design of local authority buildings.

The planning department produce Supplementary Planning Guidance Notes on residential development Standards (which includes residential safety and security) and a Shopfront Design Guide which also includes advice on security. These are both available from the planning policy section.

Regeneration projects in the borough include areas such as safety and security within their development plans.
