East London council Waltham Forest, have today urged the capital’s small businesses to take advantage of the £1.7bn of contracts still available in the run up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The call follows that made by Olympic chiefs yesterday as they addressed more than 500 businesses at the London 2012 Business Summit in Newham’s ExCeL Centre.

Waltham Forest Council Leader, Cllr Chris Robbins - who last week pledged to invest £5m to improve Leyton’s high street - said: We have always said Waltham Forest’s 2012 Legacy will be one of jobs, education and opportunity.

By working with organisations such as LOCOG and the ODA, we’ve taken real steps towards achieving that in the last few years, but now more than ever, our local economy needs our continued support.

I strongly urge every businessman and woman in east London to see today’s announcement for what it is: a truly once in a lifetime opportunity to be a part of the team delivering the Olympic Games.”

Throughout the recession, Waltham Forest Council have hosted a number of sessions in the borough to develop small business’ tendering skills and enable more council contracts to be let locally.

Cllr Robbins added: We train our young people for life after the Games, we train our adults for the skills needed to help deliver the Games; it is only right that we also train our businesses to take advantage of the massive opportunities these Games pose.”
