Support the William Morris Gallery Development Project
The William Morris Gallery is currently drawing up plans for the major William Morris Gallery Development Project to extend and refurbish the Gallery.
When the project is complete in 2012, far more works of art will be on display, the galleries will have been completely renovated and all of our facilities will have been significantly improved and made fully accessible. There will, in particular, be a dedicated space for school groups, a new study area and an excellent shop and tearoom. We will also be developing a programme of activities and events to make our heritage more engaging to a wider and more diverse audience.
We would like to invite you to attend a public consultation event at the William Morris Gallery on one of the following two dates:
- Wednesday 17 March, 6pm-7.30pm and
- Sunday 21 March, 3pm-4.30pm
Our project architects, Pringle Richards Sharratt will be giving a half hour presentation on our proposed designs for the building and exhibitions at the start of both events, followed by a question and answer session.
This is your opportunity to find out more about and get involved in the project. We would very much welcome your comments on our plans.
We hope you can join us and look forward to seeing you at the Gallery on 17 or 21 March.

Plans are currently being developed to support a round two application to the Heritage Lottery Fund for the William Morris Gallery Development Project. The Project is also being supported financially by Waltham Forest Council. Should the application to the Lottery be unsuccessful, the Project will go ahead on a smaller scale and your donation will still go towards for the aforementioned items.

Background
Waltham Forest Council has successfully bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to help further develop the William Morris Gallery.
The William Morris Gallery Development Project aims to develop the William Morris Gallery to create a first class visitor facility and a centre of excellence for the study of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement, through refurbishment of the existing Gallery, addition of a new extension and delivery of an engaging programme of heritage events and activities.
The Project aims to conserve and enhance the Grade II* listed building, conserve a nationally and internationally important collection, create an improved and accessible visitor attraction and make our heritage more accessible and more engaging to a wider and more diverse audience.
The HLF grant process takes place over two rounds. Organisations can bid for round one funding to develop a project and then proceed to a round two bid for funding to deliver the project. The William Morris Gallery applied for £80,000 round one funding in November 2008, which was successful earlier this year. Waltham Forest Council has also made a significant contribution.
Cllr Geraldine Reardon, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Arts and Culture said:
“Being awarded Heritage Lottery funding is fantastic news for the William Morris Gallery. The Development Project will allow us to attract more visitors and ensure many more generations of people can enjoy the groundbreaking work of William Morris in his home borough."
The William Morris Gallery is currently developing plans and will be applying for round two HLF funding in Spring 2010 for project delivery costs. We hope that HLF and Waltham Forest Council will be the Project’s two main funders, however we still have a considerable amount of funding to raise.
