Waltham Forest underwent many changes during the Second World War, mainly from the affects of bombing. At the end of the war many locals celebrated peace by putting on a street party, as illustrated by this scene on Vicarage Road, Leyton.

Very few areas of Chingford, Leyton and Walthamstow remained unaffected by bombing. This view of 130-134 High Street, Walthamstow, taken after a High Explosive bomb had fallen on 27 December 1940 shows the results of just one bomb. A good account of the effect of the war in Walthamstow is available in "War Over Walthamstow" whilst the Second World War Resource Pack produced by Vestry House Museum contains reproduced documents held in the collection.
