The High Street today is best known for Walthamstow Market, the longest daily market in Europe. This began in 1885 and many bargains can still be found on it. However, the High Street itself has a long history as the main focal point for Walthamstow and houses a major shopping centre, town square and Central Library. In the past it has been the home to The Palace Theatre, swimming baths and a wide range of well known retailers.

Clarke's Cottages, shown here in 1913, were typical of property on the High Street at the turn of the 20th century. After the demolition of the cottages this site was the location for the Carlton Cinema, Tesco's and now the High Street entrance to Selborne Walk Shopping centre.
