The Forest Philharmonic Orchestra  One the country’s leading community orchestras, which has been based in Waltham Forest since 1964, plays across London, notably in the Barbican Centre and Royal Festival Hall.

Sunday 7 December, 6.30pm

  • WAGNER Overture - 'Flying Dutchman'
  • DVORÁK - Tone Poem: 'In Nature's Realm'
  • BRAHMS - Variations on St Anthony Chorale
  • FRANCK - Symphony in D

Dvoøák’s tone poem In Nature’s Realm is a portrayal of the Bohemian countryside at its most benevolent and unthreatening. Based on the St Antony chorale, Brahms’s work varies the theme in wonderful ways, while the sweep and scope of Franck’s Symphony pays homage to Wagner.

Tickets are available from tickets@forestphilharmonic.org.uk or by calling 01279 814 931.

Tickets will also be available on the night. Stalls cost £10 (concessions £8) / Balcony £14 (concessions £11). Season tickets are also available (20 per cent off).

Dates for other concerts in the Walthamstow Assembly Hall series are:

Sunday 1 March, 6.30pm

  • VERDI - Requiem (London Oriana Choir)

Few choral works have captured the public imagination in the way that Verdi’s Requiem has. The soaring, lyrical melodies that lie perfectly for the human voice, the work’s extraordinary dramatic and emotional intensity, especially the famous Dies irae, all contribute to the Requiem’s status as a great icon of Western music.

Sunday 21 June, 6.30pm

  • VERDI Overture - Sicilian Vespers
  • BRAHMS - Violin Concerto (Soloist - Tamsin Waley-Cohen)
  • SHOSTAKOVICH - Symphony No 9

Tamsin Waley-Cohen (violin)

A BBC Young Musician of the Year strings finalist, Tamsin Waley-Cohen is a rising star in the violin world, having performed with many London orchestras. The season comes to a close with one of Shostakovich’s shorter and more light-hearted symphonies. With influences of Mozart the first movement is almost playful, while the finale is full of joie de vivre.
