Waltham Forest in conjunction with Ascham Homes have produced a map showing heat loss information from houses in Waltham Forest.
The information was captured by an aircraft flying over the Borough on the night of 26 February 2008. You can use the map to see how much heat is being lost from any property in the borough.
As part of the Home Energy Conservation Act 1995, local councils must increase domestic energy efficiency and decrease carbon emissions. Aerial infrared photography provides valuable information about which properties are losing a lot of heat and can help business, individuals and the Council to work out where measures such as insulation may help to reduce energy consumption.
The map shows how much heat a dwelling was losing when the aircraft flew over. It is only a guide to how much heat a property is losing and does not show how energy efficient a property is, as the amount of heat a building loses can be influenced by many factors.
The map’s colour shading represents how much heat was being lost.
Very High illustrates that there was a significant heat loss on that night. This may be due to inadequate loft insulation and therefore heat is escaping at a very high rate OR it may be caused by a reflective surface such as a metal roof.
Very Low illustrates that there was minimal heat loss, this may be caused by very efficient loft insulation or by the heating not being on within the dwelling.
Home improvements
With some simple energy saving home improvements, you can save money, improve the comfort of your home and help fight climate change.
An energy efficient house makes economical sense as it's cheaper to run and it could be a key selling point if you choose to sell your house.
