A scheme which enables people to move out of London

Are you:

  • a council tenant?
  • a housing association tenant?
  • homeless and living in temporary accommodation?
  • desperate to move?
  • unable to get a transfer?
  • thought about moving out of London?

The Moving on Up Scheme (also known as The LAWN Scheme) helps people move from one part of the UK to another. It works by linking councils and housing associations that have long waiting lists with councils and housing associations that may have empty homes or shorter waiting lists.

Councils and housing associations using this scheme have helped more than 1,300 families move from London and the South to homes in the Midlands, the North of England, and parts of Scotland and Wales.

Moving to a new area is a big step, which takes a lot of consideration and is not going to suit everyone. The properties on offer are miles away from London, the closest being 2 hours away. However, for the many households that have moved it has meant they have the chance to make a fresh start in a new home of the size that they need.

Where can I go?

Housing Association and council homes are available for families in a wide choice of locations in the Midlands and the North of the UK. Together we can offer:

  • Self contained, good quality houses, flats and retirement homes
  • Affordable rents
  • Help and advice to find local jobs
  • Help with settling in to your new area
  • Help with removal costs

Who can we help?

If you live in a council or housing association home, are living in temporary accommodation or are on the housing register, you may be able to move via this scheme.
