» To report a dead animal on a public highway use our online form

For general enquiries regarding removal of dead animals from public highways you can also call Waltham Forest Direct on 020 8496 3000.

The Council (or its appointed contractor) will:

  • Remove and dispose of dead animals from the public highway (roads and pavements), and public parks and open spaces that are managed by the Council
  • Remove and dispose of bagged dead animals from the front boundary of domestic properties

The service is provided Monday to Friday (not bank holidays) unless otherwise instructed.

Dead animals on the public highway (roads and pavements) and in public parks and open spaces will be removed by the Council or the Council’s contractors upon discovery, or following formal notification. The most usual formal notification is a report to Waltham Forest Direct made by a member of the public.

In order for the Council (or its appointed contractor) to remove a dead animal from a domestic property the dead animal must be placed in a properly securely bagged bag (not a carrier bag) and left at the front boundary of the property (either outside or just inside the front gate). Collection will be within twenty four hours of formal notification to the Council, most usually in the form of a report to Waltham Forest Direct.

The Council (or its appointed contractor) will not bag, collect un-bagged dead animals or retrieve bagged animals other than from the front boundary of a domestic property.

Where dead domestic animals (pets) are collected, the Council (or its appointed contractor) will aim to scan the animal to find out if it is micro chipped, and retain scanned information and collars for a period after disposal.

All dead animals collected by the Council (or its appointed contractor) will be delivered for incineration. Dead animals will not be stored.
