Mixed recycling

Residents have told us they want recycling to be made easier, so Waltham Forest Council is trialling mixed recycling in parts of the borough from Monday 6 April.

What does mixed recycling mean?

Mixed recycling means that all the materials that can be recycled are placed in one container, either a wheeled bin or sack. They are then collected in a standard dustcart and taken to a materials recovery facility where they are sorted and sent on for reprocessing.

Why is the Council trialing mixed recycling?

We are trailing mixed recycling as residents have told us they want recycling to be made easier.

Your recycling collection day will stay the same.

Benefits to mixed recycling

  • Recycling your materials together will reduce the amount of overspill that is sometimes left when we put the materials into the lorry, keeping your roads cleaner
  • The collection teams will not have to separate the recycling into different compartments of the truck like normal, it will go into one large compartment. This will allow the truck to move on quicker, creating less congestion on the borough’s streets

Who’s taking part?

The pilot is being carried out across the borough, but only certain recycling collections are taking part. To see if you are in the trial area, please click on your area below.

What can you recycle as part of the mixed recycling trial?

You are currently recycling 30 per cent of your waste which is great, but we want you to recycle more! Recycling is an easy way that we can all make a difference to the environment, and work towards a cleaner, greener borough. Waltham Forest Council is committed to making recycling as quick, simple and clean as possible for residents. The mixed recycling trial will help us achieve this.

  • Glass bottles and jars (rinsed)
  • Food/drink cans and foil (rinsed and squashed)
  • Paper
  • Any size cardboard (flattened)
  • Plastic bottles (rinsed and squashed – no lids)

You will not need to sort your recycling, just place them in the bag, and put your recycling out as normal.

What can you not recycle as part of the mixed recycling trial?

  • Household rubbish - put this out with your normal refuse collection
  • Batteries - can be recycled at the Council’s recycling centres
  • Engine oil - can be recycled at the Council’s recycling centres
  • Textiles and shoes - you can take these to a local charity shop or these can be recycled at the Council’s recycling centres and at various mini recycling centres across the borough.
