St Mary Road Public Realm Improvement Project
The St Mary Road / Hoe Street Junction is a key pedestrian route for both residents living in the village and for visitors to the restaurants in the village and the Vestry House Museum. The use of this route as a key entrance into the village makes it a prime opportunity site to improve the public realm and highlight the entrance to the Village.
The St. Mary Road Infrastructure Project included:
- Part removal of a planter outside the café on the corner of Hoe Street and St Mary Road to provide a small paved area allowing seating for the café to be provided
- Improvements to the planter opposite the seating area with new plants and removal of rubbish, and re-painting of street furniture, paving etc in the vicinity

Growth Area Fund Round 2 - St James Street Infrastructure Improvements Project
In April 2006 the Council secured Department of Communities and Local Government Growth Areas Funding (round 2) for the revitalisation of St James Street and the South Grove area.
The St. James Infrastructure Project included:
- A route from Brunner Road to St James Street The route was blocked off at the Brunner Road end to stop the route being used as a cut-through. This opened up frontage on the adjoining site (St James Street Health Centre) for potential future re-development and improvements / investment to the health centre. The road is designed for two way traffic, but not for through traffic, and the priority will be toward pedestrian use. The same high quality materials and finishes as have been used throughout Walthamstow Town Centre were adopted to create a sense of continuity.
- Improvements in and around Courtney Place aimed to strengthen the links with St James Station and the route between South Grove and the High Street. The links improved community safety and strengthen pedestrian priority, a key concern for potential retail developers who are considering development on the South Grove site. These improvements also reinforce the development potential of Courtney Place.
Work on the Home Zone started in spring of 2007. The regeneration of South Grove is also being looked at as part of the government pilot underserved markets programme and this research will develop and encourage even greater developer interest in this area of Walthamstow.

The Revitalisation of Walthamstow Town Centre - End of Scheme Report
This scheme was developed as a comprehensive response by the Council to the poor quality local public realm. The scheme has been implemented over the last 5 years, with a key challenge being the creation of a heart for Walthamstow. This objective led to the re-creation of the town square and gardens, providing a focus for the town centre whilst linking the newly improved public transport interchange with the retail hub. Lighting, paving and signage have also improved Walthamstow for residents, visitors and shoppers in addition to improving community safety.
