Design Awards
Representatives from Newport School and Jose Taguiang from NPS London Ltd with their awards for the best new building 2007.

This year's Design Awards, run in conjunction with Guardian Newspapers, have once again helped to raise awareness of, and reward, good quality design in the built environment of the borough.

Twelve entries from across the borough were received for this year's competition, and each scheme was visited by a judging panel consisting of Councillor Terry Wheeler (Cabinet member for Investment and Enterprise), Dan Mason (Chief Editor Guardian Newspapers), Tim Bennett-Goodman (Waltham Forest Arts Council), Richard Harral (Royal Institute of British Architects), Chris Hartiss (Waltham Forest Civic Society) and Ruth Richards (Royal Town Planning Institute).

The Design Awards presentation evening was held on 3 December at The Arc, St Mary's Cof E Primary School in Walthamstow, last year's Best New Building Awards winner. Greater London Assembly Member Jennette Arnold was a special guest at a well attended event which saw Councillor Terry Wheeler announce the winners for 2007, who were presented with brass plaques and certificates in recognition of their efforts.

Councillor Wheeler said:
"This year's Design Awards competition has been a great success and I'd like to thank all concerned, particularly our partners at The Guardian, my fellow judges, and all those associated with the design, construction and submission of this year's entries.

Good design is at the top of the Council's agenda and it is important that we continue to set the highest standards not just for major schemes but for all new developments in the borough. Next year's Awards scheme will therefore feature a new category for small-scale domestic additions as a way of promoting and rewarding better quality residential extensions, something which large numbers of residents in the borough are likely to be affected by, and which can have a significant impact on the quality of the local environment.

Finally I'd like to offer my personal congratulations to all those involved in this year's winning entries"
