Heritage Plaques
Waltham Forest contains a wide variety of heritage plaques identifying a diversity of sites and buildings of historic or architectural interest. This long established tradition still continues today with the English Heritage blue plaque scheme for sites of national importance and the Council's own Waltham Forest Heritage plaque scheme for sites of more local interest. See Heritage Plaques in Waltham Forest
Listed buildings
The borough contains just over 100 buildings of special architectural or historic interest which are listed by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport on the advice of English Heritage. These buildings are an important and irreplaceable local asset and have been given special protection under planning laws. Listed building consent is required for demolition and for most works of alteration or addition, whether external or internal, where their special interest would be affected. If you are unsure about any issues relating to listed buildings in the borough, advice is always available from the Council's Conservation Officer.
