How can I find a grave?

Contact the Cemetery office on 020 8524 5030. We will need a grave number to locate it on a map.

If no grave number what information do I need?

We need the full name of the deceased and the date of death or date of burial.

How much will it cost?

If there is no date available, the charge for a search is £16.00 per 5 year period per name.

Can I be buried here even though I do not live in London Borough of Waltham Forest?

Providing you are buried in a grave that has already been purchased and the owner of the rights gives their consent.

New graves are only sold for the burial of persons who were resident in London Borough of Waltham Forest at their time of death.

The above criteria also applies to cremated remains. Please refer to Cemetery Regulation 8.

Can I choose where the grave will be?

Selection is allowed but limited to areas currently in use. The Cemetery Superintendent Registrar has the right to determine all grave spaces. Please refer to Cemetery Regulation 9.

Can I put plants on the grave?

Plants can be planted in the 18" area allowed at the head of the grave. The rest of the grave will be grassed once the ground has settled.

On older type graves with full size kerb sets, the 'inside' of the memorial may be planted out. Please refer to Cemetery Regulation 3b.

What type and size of memorial can I have?

Lawn type headstone and small garden kerb. Headstone 3' high x 2' 6" wide x 3" or 4" thick Kerbs to fit area 18" in front of headstone base x 2' 6" wide. Please refer to Cemetery Regulation 4.

What are the cemetery opening/closing times?

Please refer to Cemetery Regulation 1.

Are there toilets available?

There are toilets available for cemetery visitors during normal office hours. The toilet is situated in the office building at the main entrance at Chingford Mount and just inside the cemetery on the left at Walthamstow cemetery.

Do I need a funeral director to arrange the bereavement services?

There is no regulation that states that the services of a Funeral Director are mandatory. There are rules and regulations on the disposal of the deceased. Information on these are available from the Cemetery Registrar.

How do I exhume a dead body?

An application must be made to the Home Office unless ordered by a coroner or Police Authority. Application forms and further information are available from Chingford Mount Cemetery.

Can a dead body be repatriated from Abroad?

There are rules governing the exhumation of a dead body, and the repatriation between countries. Advise should be sort from the Home Office, and it is recommended that the services of a funeral director is employed. For further information visit http://www.direct.gov.uk
