Neighbourhood improvements so far
The oral history project
This project started in November 2006, has involved both older and younger people in the neighbourhood in recording memories of the area as it used to be. About 35 people have participated in the project so far, including 10 young people who have interviewed allotment holders and other older people, and taken photographs of the area which was exhibited in February 2007. Stage 2 of the project continues throughout 2007 and will culminate in a three week exhibition at the Vestry House museum in February 2008.
Street Wardens
The four neighbourhood wardens who patrolled the neighbourhood up until June 2007 were a real asset, and made a very valuable contribution to the effort to address issues of anti-social behaviour and community safety in the area. However, the service had to be withdrawn because of lack of funds in June 2007.
Community allotment project
After securing the plot at the beginning of the year, a core group of about 6 people worked together to clear the plot, build a garden shed and to plant and reap their first crop of tomatoes, potatoes and sweet corn. They have also organised an open day and two bar-b-que events aimed at attracting new members to the project.
Youth Club at the Forest Road YMCA
Throughout 2006/7 the youth club operated one night per week (Tuesday and Thursday) and attracted an average of 30 young people each week. Most members live in the Drive Super Output area and the programme of activities included dance, music making, physical exercise and social development.
Ongoing improvements
- Continuation of the community Allotment and gardening scheme focussing on greening the neighbourhood
- Phase two of the intergenerational oral history project
- Support for Detached youth and community outreach in The Drive, a youth weekend and continuation of the YMCA youth club
