We have gathered a lot of statistical evidence around the differences in opportunities for people who live in the Better Neighbourhood areas compared to other areas. We use this evidence together with the views of the community to challenge and work with services in reshaping how they deliver and respond to local need.

Our approach

Our approach to evidence gathering involved surveying 1604 households in Cann Hall/Cathall, Hoe Street/Wood Street, Higham Hill/Valley and Lea Bridge/Markhouse priority areas. The surveys started on 19 March 2007 and included questions on what residents’ thought of their local area, what needed to be improved, community cohesion, resident involvement and health and community safety. The surveys were done in person with residents in their homes, with surveys taking approximately 20 minutes.

From the surveys it became apparent that there appeared to be 4 key areas for improvement and concern for all 4 areas: community safety, local environment, resident involvement and youth engagement.

To discuss the issues in greater detail we also held four community workshops in June.  Residents from the priority areas were invited to attend and to discussed some of the key topics that came up in the surveys in more detail. One was held for each of the four areas, a total of 114 people participated in these workshops. Participants were selected randomly from those that were interviewed.
