The Learning Support Centre is the Pupil Referral Unit for primary aged children at risk of permanent exclusion. Headteachers refer children through the Social Inclusion Service, who will pass referrals to the unit if they feel it is appropriate. The unit provides children with an alternative educational provision for two terms and then children begin to reintegrate back to their referring school with support from the unit. Children receive a broad and balanced curriculum at the unit alongside intensive social skills training.

Description of the service

  • Targeted on children that are identified as at risk of permanent exclusion
  • A referral is made through the Social Inclusion team
  • If considered appropriate the referral is passed to the unit
  • The unit will offer a place if the child's needs can be accommodated
  • If no place is available the child will be placed on the waiting list
  • When a child is placed at the unit it is full time for two terms
  • A review is held after two terms to discuss progress and set a reintegration programme
  • The child has a planned reintegration with support from the unit initially
  • When appropriate, the unit support is withdrawn as the child's time in school increases
  • When all support necessary for the individual child is in place and the placement is proving successful, the child will return full time to mainstream school
  • The aim of the unit is to raise levels of achievement. Children's literacy and numeracy levels are tested regularly while they are at the unit
  • Children receive intensive social skills input in order to modify their behaviour, in order for them to reintegrate into mainstream education

Children's progress is monitored at multi-agency reviews held regularly. The aim of the unit is to reintegrate children back into the mainstream system with a planned reintegration package to suit individual needs.
