Your school’s Disability Access Plan (DAP) will now form part of your Disability Equality Duty (DED). This came into force for secondary schools in December 2006 and for primary schools, Pupil Referral Units and primary and secondary special schools in December 2007.
Each school’s DAP has generally only been concerned with physical access issues. The DED is much broader, covering policy-making, service users, employment and access to the curriculum. These issues, together with physical access issues must be covered in the Disability Equality Scheme (DES).
Waltham Forest Council has an ambitious equality vision for the Borough “by 2012 Waltham Forest will be a community fit for all”. With this in mind and statutory obligations, Waltham Forest Council’s Schools Disability Access Strategy (SDAS) has been updated and progressed through the formal consultation process.
This consultation process has now concluded, with relatively no changes to the draft publication other than requests to replace the interpreting and translation page.
The School Disability Access Strategy publication is now available to download, together with guidance and supporting documents, to assist schools with their schemes and plans.
“By working together we will bring the vision to life”.
