A fundamental principle of the Educational Psychology Service is that, to be effective, it is necessary to work with and help children, parents, teachers and others solve psychological problems at different levels of intervention ranging from a “child” to a whole school, system or organisation level.
The service offered to Primary and Secondary Mainstream and Special Schools provides consultation, assessment, advice and intervention, training and research, regarding pupils with special educational needs.
Our Service provides:
- Consultation with staff
- Observations of pupils and group
- Meetings with parents, advice and support
- Individual assessment
- School visit summary forms
- Feedback of relevant findings to school staff and parents/carers and recommendations about interventions where appropriate
- Advice on plans and interventions
- Attendance at reviews and other conferences
- Research and development
- Statutory assessment under 1996 Education Act
- Attendance at statutory annual reviews
- Direct therapeutic work
- Advice to school regarding SEN procedures, agencies, research findings and other areas within the knowledge and experience of the Educational Psychologist (EP).
Quality Standards
Psychologists will conduct themselves in accordance with the code of ethics of the Association of Educational Psychologists and the British Psychological Society
EPs will inform schools as soon as possible of any changes in Service delivery, including a change of EP. EPs will also contact schools immediately if a delay or cancellation of a visit is unavoidable
For schools to maximise the effectiveness of the service, staff need to:
- prepare an agenda in advance of visits
- allocate realistic times for activities
- make available appropriate school records on pupils discussed
- obtain parental consent for all pupils referred
- release staff where necessary to meet the EP
- complete appropriate consultation forms
- make available a suitable room for meetings with pupils and parents
