Children and Young People in Care Team - Education

Service Description

The Children and Young People in Care Team offers a fully advisory and support service to schools in raising attainment of Looked After Children. We will ensure that we:

  • Respond immediately and appropriately to all enquiries about Looked After Children and advise on the required action Liaise with relevant agencies to address concerns
  • Provide targeted educational support to schools
  • Provide the services of an Educational Psychologist where deemed necessary
  • Advise schools of their responsibilities in relation to Looked After Children
  • Maintain a database of all Looked After Children in Waltham Forest
  • Disseminate information on a ‘need to know’ basis
  • Deliver training to all relevant professionals working with Looked After Children
  • Publish a termly Newsletter

Service Innovation for 2007/08

Closer liaison with school admissions of Looked After Children, particularly from other boroughs so that schools are provided with up to date information

Schools are not charged for the following services

  • Regular professional training sessions
  • Educational support to Looked After Children in school

Specific service standards, key performance indicators and evaluation systems

  • Each training course is evaluated and the feedback is acted upon
  • DfES indicators in relation to Looked After Children are reported upon
  • Every Looked After Child has an up to date Personal Education Plan

In order to serve you effectively we request

  • Schools contact the Children and Young People in Care Team immediately when there are concerns with regard to Looked After Children on their roll
  • Every Designated Teacher for Looked After Children attends at least one training session during the academic year
