Project information

Whitefield Schools and Centre, in Walthamstow, offers 300 places for pupils with special educational needs (SEN). Provision at Whitefield is divided into three specialised schools.
Whitefield Schools and Centre is now undergoing extensive improvements to its Communication and Interaction Secondary (CIS) part of its school.
Building of its CIS school is the final piece of the school site’s master plan which has now seen start of the construction of a new ‘state of the art’ building for its 74 CIS pupils.
The CIS school provides education that meets the learning needs of its pupils, aged between 11-19, who have autistic spectrum conditions, speech and language impairment or hearing loss.
Construction work on site is now ongoing and nearing completion. Some of the CIS pupils have been temporarily moved in to Aveling Park School, in Walthamstow, until all works are completed in late 2010.
The remaining two schools on the site are unaffected and continue to be occupied and used.
Benefits to the school and the community
Construction works, proposed to be completed late 2010, include:
- A new CIS school block
- A new fully accessible entrance from Hale End Road
- Better accessibility inside the school
- ICT upgrades
- Specialist learning facilities including science, art and design, and food technology
- A performance studio
In addition there will be new accessible changing facilities for its gym – which is for use by the school and the community.
