Kelmscott School
Refurbishment of Kelmscott School, in Walthamstow, was completed in August 2008. The £11.2 million scheme includes:
- a new entrance
- a state of the art new school hall
- new school kitchen and dining area
- drama and music studios
- school library
- science laboratories
- new outdoor ampitheatre and 'green' play spaces
Part of the refurbishment of the main building is the creation of a light and airy Learning Resource Centre located in the heart of the school, with improved teaching and social spaces.
The scheme was completed in phases to accommodate everyday school life through the new build and refurbishment process.
Kelmscott has also benefited from improvements to ICT facilities for pupils and staff. An enhanced ICT infrastructure has been installed, which includes a computerised registration system, a high specification CCTV system and a cashless payment system for pupils.
These improvements have enhanced the school’s environment and support teaching and learning for both pupils and staff.
Benefits for the community
The school now has closer links with the Markhouse Centre, which now has more access to the school and its facilities. There is also extensive community use of the school for 'after school' clubs and Saturday classes and clubs within the community.
'Post 16' provision and more pupil places
The school will be providing 70 places for ‘post-16’ education from September 2010, meaning pupils can stay on after their GCSE examinations and gain further qualifications at the same school.
Also, the number of pupils able to attend Kelmscott will be increased from its current number of 900 by an additional two forms of entry to provide an additional 300 secondary places, from September 2014.
