2 November 2009 - Students advise on new school designs
Two local students are to act as advisors on how new schools should look and feel.
Year 9 pupils Harry and Khadija, from Highams Park School, have been selected to work with the Sorrell Foundation who, last year, worked with over 200 pupils from Waltham Forest to help design how local schools will look in the future.
As the borough’s £300m Building Schools for the Future (BSF) investment programme continues, Harry and Khadija will continue to work with the Sorrell Foundation to help young people have their say in new shcool designs.
Project information
The number of pupils able to attend Highams Park School in each year group (e.g. Years 7-11) will increase, from its current number of 215 to 240 per year group, from September 2012.
The number of pupils able to attend the sixth form at Highams Park School will be also increased from its current number of 350 by an additional 50 places, from September 2010. This means that 400 pupils will be able to stay on after their GCSE examinations and gain further qualifications at the same school.
In addition, the school is now providing places for children with special educational needs (SEN) from September 2009. There will be 15 SEN places for children with visual impairment and complex needs (VI).
The school has recently undergone extensive refurbishments, which has included the construction of a new sports centre and a new teaching block.
As part of the BSF programme it is proposed that the school will undergo further developments and improvements to its buildings and facilities, to help accommodate these additional places, for the benefit of pupils and staff.
Benefits to the school and our young people
Last year the Sorrell Foundation worked with groups of pupils from the school, to listen to their hopes and ambitions for the project.
The pupils, excited by the opportunities that this project brings, shared their ideas on how good design will improve the quality of life in their school.
