The Office of Mayor
In May each year, the Council elects a Councillor to serve as Mayor for twelve months. The Mayor in turn, appoints a Deputy Mayor, who also serves for a year.
The Mayor is the Borough's civic and ceremonial head for a year and during that time, chooses not to serve on committees but instead acts as Chair of full Council meetings.
The Mayor represents Waltham Forest at public, civic and ceremonial events. The Mayor's role extends outside the Borough to include events and organisations that support the community. The Mayor also entertains guests in the Mayor's Parlour for both formal and informal events.
Together with the Queen's representative, Major Jeremy Fern TD DL, the Mayor receives members of the Royal Family and VIPs during official visits to the area.
The Mayor's Office
The Mayor's Office comes within the Members' Support Unit. It provides comprehensive administrative and advisory support to the Mayor. This includes managing the diaries of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, and organising and co-ordinating many of the major civic events during the year.
If you want to invite the Mayor to an event, you need to complete the protocol form (DOC, 41KB). Please ensure that you fill out as much of the form as you can and that it is sent to the Mayor's Office as early as possible. If you do not, this may delay the Mayor's Office being able to let you know if the Mayor can attend your event. However, it should be noted that it is not always possible for either the Mayor or Deputy Mayor to accept an invitation.
It should also be noted that the Mayor and Deputy Mayor should not be contacted directly concerning Mayoral engagements. The engagements diary is very complex and requires careful co-ordination; contacting the Mayor or Deputy Mayor direct can cause both embarrassment and disappointment.
The Mayor's Office is open from 9am-5.15pm. When staff are unavailable for any reason, you may leave a telephone message. This will usually be answered within one working day, or the next working day if left after 5.15pm or over the weekend.
