I have been a councillor in Leytonstone since 1998 and before becoming leader, I was the cabinet member for the Environment Portfolio. I was elected Leader of the Council on 30th July 2003 and I'm currently the youngest leader in London and one of the youngest in the country.
Since my election, I've worked with senior officers and other councillors to steer the council's recovery plan initially, and now the council's improvement plan. We've made good progress with most of the targets being met to date, but we know that there is much more to do.
I want Waltham Forest to become a place which people think of as somewhere great to live, work and play. The council has a large role to play in increasing people's quality of life, from making sure that the streets are clean, to educating our children and caring for the vulnerable in our communities. I will strive to ensure that we continuously improve our performance in all aspects of our work.
It's an exciting time for the borough with the hosting of the 2012 Olympics bringing in even more outside interest. I know that Waltham Forest is made up of vibrant and active communities and individuals who take great pride in the borough and want to work together to see the borough prosper. I want to make sure that the council is at the heart of this prosperity by leading and driving it forward.
