Project Objectives

  • Each school to complete an environmental audit and come forward with a set of proposals for saving energy, water, waste, and increased material recycling.
  • Possible model for future Council learning programmes.

Project Outcomes

Each school to have environmental audit and associated proposals for saving energy, water and waste, and increased recycling of materials. Results to be fed into the Climate Change Working Group, via Alan King Energy Manger.

Project Worker

Carmela Crute Jones, runs environmental on behalf of the Hornbeam Centre and has undertaken previous project for Environmental Services and other Community Councils.

Project Tasks

  • Arrange meeting with nominated contact from each schools to agree on programme content prepare audit questionnaire covering the projects objectives as listed in this brief (Project Preparation).
  • Carry out the audit with the young people (and a member of teaching staff) and make a list of findings and possible suggestions. The group should consist of between 4 – 10 young people and should be members of the environmental club, school council or any other group that the school wishes to nominate. The young people should be coached in the relevant issues and involving them in purposive learning activities with an environmental theme. Take digital photographs where improvements can be made to show a before and after scenario. (Complete authorisation forms)
  • Anaylse findings and make recommendations as to suitable “improvements” that could be made in conjunction with the School Head or representative and budget allocation i.e. £250 per school.
  • Send details of items to be purchased to the Community Council Officer with the Schools confirmation. Community Council Officer will release funds after referring to the Management Board
  • Order and purchase items and install within the schools.
  • Carry out another audit with the young people report back improvements energy savings. Take digital photographs.
  • Provide a written report detailing all aspects of the project, i.e. who took part, what was found and what the improvements / outcomes were.
  • Attend an event to celebrate the project success at a future date yet to be arranged (Dec 07).
  • Attend a future Community Council meeting to report back to residents and councillors (28 January 2008).
