Complaints and investigations against councillors

  • Who can make a complaint about a breach of the Code and how?

Up and until the 8 May 2008, anyone can make a complaint about a breach of the Code to the Standards Board for England. The complaint must be in writing. If the Standards Board consider that the complaint should be investigated, it will refer the matter to an ‘ethical standards' officer.

  • The Local Assessment

From 8 May 2008, the Council's Standards Committee will deal with complaints about breaches of the Member Code of Conduct. The Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act 2007 transferred the functions from the Standards Board for England to the local Standards Committee, with the Standards Board taking a more strategic role

The Standards Committee will only investigate complaints if a Member breaches the Code of Conduct.  The full Code is contained in Part 9 of the Council’s Constitution.

If you want to make a complaint against a Member, please read the guidance below before you fill out the complaint form.

If your complaint is not about a Member, then please use the Council's Complaints Procedure.
