What does the Council disclose?
The Council holds 2 versions of the electoral register. A full version which contains the full name and address of all voters and an edited version which only holds the names of voters.
It is a legal requirement that voters’ names and addresses are held on the full register and that the full register is available for inspection by anyone. However, it is unlawful to provide copies to anyone for any purpose other than election or law enforcement purposes. Credit reference agencies are also permitted to use the full register to confirm the name and address of applicants for credit and to help stop money laundering.
The edited version of the electoral register only contains voters’ names if they consent. You are given the opportunity to consent when you complete your voter registration form. The edited version is available for sale and use for any purpose.
