Economic activity questions were asked of all 16 to 74 year olds in the Census 2001. The number economically active (either in work or unemployed and looking for work) in 2001 was 106,652 compared to in 1991 when 106,578 persons were economically active.

In 2001 of 16-74 year olds:

  • 42.4% were employed full-time
  • 9.2% employed part-time up to 30 hours per week
  • 7.4% were self-employed
  • 3.2% were economically active full-time students
  • 4.9% of the age group were unemployed in 2001
  • 9.4% were retired
