St James Street Infrastructure Improvements Project

In April 2006 the Council secured Department of Communities and Local Government Growth Areas Funding (round 2) for the revitalisation of St James Street and the South Grove area.

The St. James Infrastructure Project will consist of the following elements:

  1. A route from Brunner Road to St James Street The route is to be blocked off at the Brunner Road end to stop the route being used as a cut-through. This will open up frontage on the adjoining site for potential future re-development. The road is designed for two way traffic, but not for through traffic, and the priority will be toward pedestrian use. The same high quality materials and finishes as have been used throughout Walthamstow Town Centre will be adopted to create a sense of continuity.
  2. Improvements in and around Courtney Place These are designed to strengthen the integration of the site to both St James Station and the route between South Grove and the High Street. The links will improve community safety and strengthen pedestrian priority, a key concern for potential retail developers who are considering development on the South Grove site. These improvements will also reinforce the development potential of Courtney Place.

This Home Zone route is essential to the plans to re-develop the St James Street Health Centre as the route is mainly pedestrian, which opens up frontage on three sides of the St James Street Health Centre site. Opening up this frontage will facilitate the redevelopment and improvement of the St James Street Health Centre and create the opportunity for a residential component of the scheme to be included.

Work on the Home Zone started in spring of 2007. The regeneration of South Grove is also being looked at as part of the government pilot underserved markets programme and this research will develop and encourage even greater developer interest in this area of Walthamstow.
