Standard 3: Role of adults and staff

This standard focuses on the involvement of children and young people in the recruitment, selection, induction, supervision, appraisal and training of staff. Council staff and other adults working with children and young people must be prepared to share decisions and power. Children and young people should have an important role in the design and delivery of training to staff, elected members and other partners.

In terms of this standard, children, young people and their parents/ guardians in Waltham Forest have told us they appreciate the following:

  • Working with staff/adults that have an understanding of their needs (e.g. cultural, linguistic, practical) and are aware of how to support these
  • Working with staff/adults that are not only interested in their professional targets, but also in the personal development of the young people e.g. their skills and contributions are recognised and accredited
  • Staff give clear information on what can be expected from the different activities children and young people can get involved in, eg. what will be discussed at forums, issues that young people will be asked to feedback on etc.
  • Staff give clear information about how children and young people can get their ideas on the agenda and encourage them to do so
  • Staff encourage the use of complaints procedures so that children and young people use them as a matter of course, rather than feeling awkward about doing so. It may be more useful to have a ‘Suggestions Box’ rather than a complaints procedure as this removes any negative connotations
