What is a Disabled Parking Bay?

Disabled Parking Bays for the mobility impaired are intended to assist disabled people who drive themselves and because of their disability need to park as close to their property as possible.

The bays provided are discretionary and are provided to alert other drivers of the need for a disabled person to park there. We do not provide enforceable bays.

Eligibility – do I qualify for a Disabled Parking Bay?

Each application is assessed on its merit taking into account the following:

  • The applicant is in possession of a valid Blue Car Badge
  • Own or use a vehicle registered at your address
  • You do not have access to off-street parking, driveway or garage at the address
  • Be receiving either Disability Living Allowance with the highest mobility component or if you are over 65, the highest rate of Attendance Allowance. (These allowances are awarded at the discretion of the Department for works and Pensions

How do I apply for a Disabled Parking Bay?

You will also need to supply the following along with your application:

  • Proof of residency
  • Proof of benefit
  • A copy of the vehicle registration documents with the proof that the car is registered at your address

Other information

  • We need to mark the space in a ‘safe’ part of the road, so that your car does not become a road hazard by parking there
  • The road marking is a courtesy bay only and is not enforceable in law. Therefore you cannot insist that other people do not use your parking bay
  • Markings will be removed when the disabled person moves away

Can people park in my bay?

Disabled parking bays are discretionary. They are non-enforceable and are reliant on the good will of other road users.

Can I have an enforceable bay?

No, we do not provide enforceable bays.

Do I need to display my badge when I am parked in my bay?

You only need to display your bay if you live in a Controlled Parking Zone. If you do not you do not need to display your badge whilst parked in your bay.

How do I get a bay removed that is no longer required?

Contact Waltham Forest Direct. They will take your details and the details of where the bay is located. We may need contact you again for further information.

How long does the application take to be processed?

Once all the information is available the application will be processed within 10 working days.

How do I get my faded bay re-painted?

Faded bays are not re-painted. You will need to complete an application and re-apply to the Mobility Team

Can I apply for an organisational bay?

If you wish to apply for an organisational bay you must contact the Highways Department.

Once my Parking Bay has been agreed how long will it take?

Once we agree your bay the order is placed with our contractors. They can take up to three months to mark out your bay.
