What do we provide?
A high quality physiotherapy service for people with a learning disability in the borough of Waltham Forest. We can treat acute injuries or help to relieve the effects of a long term disability like Cerebral Palsy.
We assess each client’s individual needs, provide a written assessment, and where appropriate, a written physiotherapy programme which could become part of the regular care package.
We also have an Orthotics clinic on alternate Wednesday afternoons when the Orthotist comes to assess/ review the footwear, calipers and splints of clients with learning disabilities, held at Coleridge Road. The clients attend the Orthotics clinic periodically for review.
Who can have this service?
Anyone can self-refer or be referred to us by their Social Worker, G.P., or Care Worker.
Will I have to pay for the service?
No. It is provided free, according to health need.
Where do we provide this service?
In the Outpatient clinic at Coleridge Road, the hydrotherapy pool at Whipps Cross University Hospital, at Markhouse Adult Training Centre, or in your own home, whether a group home or a family home.
How long would the course of treatment last?
This depends on the individual's needs and circumstances. Some clients come regularly to Outpatients or are seen weekly at their day centre. Others may come for a short course of treatment or have one or two home visits so that their carers can learn how to carry out the physiotherapy programme.
We work closely with all the other members of the Integrated Learning Disabilities Team and will sometimes make joint home visits with people like the Occupational Therapists or Community Nurses or the Speech and Language Therapist etc
