There are a number of employment projects taking place in Waltham Forest.

Construction Training Centre

Waltham Forest Council is developing a flagship construction training centre in Leyton, adjacent to the Olympic and Stratford City development sites.

The Construction Training Centre will enable local people to obtain construction skills training which will open up a range of job opportunities. Many of these jobs will be focused on helping to deliver the development of the Olympic Park and other high profile construction projects including Stratford City and major schools building projects in Waltham Forest.

Phase 1 of this project will initially provide temporary classroom training and testing facilities for CITB CSC Health and Safety, specialist first aid and power tools training from February 2008, followed by a specialist centre for scaffolding training and the range of other skills needs.

The London Development Authority have announced an initial funding package of £9m to help local people and businesses access the opportunities that the 2012 Olympics will bring to London.

The Construction Web network partnership works with businesses within the construction sector and can also advise on employment and training in the construction industry for people located in North London. The programme supports local construction businesses by facilitating the hire of local labour to work on strategic sites in the Upper Lee Valley (ULV) area.

Key Partners Job centre Plus, British Airports Authority (BAA), London Borough of Haringey, College of North East London, Urban Futures (local regeneration agency).

The Runway to Work programme aims to provided long term unemployed people from deprived neighbourhoods in N. London with a package of support, training and work experience to help them secure and retain jobs at the airport.

The project provides participants with specific retail/catering training, as well as specific modules tailored to individual employers within Stansted Airport. The participants are guaranteed at least one interview with an employer at Stansted and receive up to six months of financial and mentoring support to enable them to stay in their jobs and progress if possible.
