Introduction
Abandoned vehicles are normally unsightly, often dangerous and are environmentally unfriendly.
Research has indicated that the presence of abandoned vehicles encourages crime and increases the fear of crime.
Waltham Forest Council is committed to maintaining the pressure to rid the streets of the plague of abandoned vehicles. It has a duty to remove them under The Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978 as amended.
Untaxed vehicles are also a problem and since July 2003 the London Borough of Waltham Forest has had the power to impound untaxed vehicles that are on a public highway, in partnership with the DVLA under Vehicle Excise Legislation.
Today's untaxed vehicle is tomorrow's abandoned vehicle. Waltham Forest is determined to interrupt the abandoned vehicle cycle and has redefined its procedures to concentrate on the removal of untaxed vehicles from our streets, by putting additional resources into this area.
The removal of unlicensed vehicles demonstrates a proactive stance in vehicle enforcement and also has an impact by reducing the general crimality in the area.
The London Borough of Waltham Forest intends to rigorously enforce the above legislation. Those who abandon vehicles are liable to prosecution.
