Personal Best - get the skills to volunteer!
A number of free courses are available to local people who are not in work or education, and would like to gain opportunities to volunteer in the community. The courses are designed to help improve skills and chances of getting a job and some offer national recognised qualifications. All those who complete the course will be guaranteed an interview to volunteer in the 2012 Games. For a list of courses available and more information, contact CLASS on 020 8523 9355.
Local businesses
There are various opportunities for businesses of all sizes to get involved in the Games and there are also benefits to be gained such as accessing some of the contracts. Past host cities have illustrated that staging the Games can be very lucrative for businesses.
If you are involved with a local business that is interested in more information, you can view the London 2012 processes and policy webpage
Construction training centre
Waltham Forest Council and partners are developing a centre that will provide training to get local people into work on the Olympic Park site. A range of construction courses will be available and includes scaffolding, steel fixing, dry lining and other courses such as health & safety and first aid. The centre will showcase new materials and construction techniques. Training will be aimed at residents of the five host boroughs and training will be responsive to developer needs on the Olympic Park.
The centre will work directly with the job brokerage initiatives in Waltham Forest, Greenwich, Hackney, Newham, and Tower Hamlets. Extensive survey work is already being undertaken on site. The Council is about to appoint a delivery partner and the centre will open later this year and will aim to train up 350 people from local communities each year. The centre will be located in Cathall Road, Leytonstone and is easily accessible for residents across the host boroughs, and is close to the Olympic Park site.

What our residents say:
Local residents on a volunteering programme in the borough
“Volunteering is a great new way to learn skills. Meet new people and prepare for working life. As Waltham Forest residents, so close to the action, we’re looking forward to the many opportunities, including volunteering, that the Games will bring both for us and our children.”
