The 2012 Games will act as a catalyst to encourage residents to change attitudes towards the environment by reducing energy use, turning off lights and appliances, turning down the heating and replacing light bulbs, these can all help to combat climate change.
Throughout the planning process, Waltham Forest will be working with the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) to ensure local residents can access the Olympic Park easily, better pavements, cycle routes and signage. After the Games, we will work towards maintaining as much open space as possible.
Waltham Forest is working with the Games organisers to ensure that the impact of road closures and construction activity is minimised and that residents are kept fully aware of all that is going on.
We will push for improvements to our local transport network: bus, rail and tube and to all access points to the Games venues after 2012 including Leyton Tube Station.
Eton Manor
Eton Manor in Leyton is the name of the area in Waltham Forest that falls within the Olympic Park boundary. The area will be used throughout the Olympic and Paralympic Games and transformed in legacy.
Olympic mode
The main training centre for athletes will be located on the site, housing four temporary 50m swimming pools, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a temporary gymnastic training centre and other custom build training facilities. Theses facilities may also hold cultural events and various spectator services.
Paralympic mode
The site will host the wheelchair tennis and Paralympic archery events. To cater for theses, 13 wheelchair tennis competitions and warm up courts, and two Paralympic archery competition fields will be required.
Legacy mode
In legacy, the site will accommodate a state of the art hockey venue, tennis and 5-a-side football centre.
Eton Manor will also house a wind turbine, ‘Angel of Leyton’. This will generate 6 percent of the on-site renewable commitment and enough electricity to power 1,200 homes in one year.
