What is the children and young people plan?
The 'children trust' brings the local authority together with partner organisations like the police, health, schools and colleges and has responsibility for making sure things get better for children, young people and families in the borough. Every children trust must produce a 'children and young people plan'.
The plan outlines the borough’s priorities for children and young people, based on a profile of their needs, and what we have been told through consultation and involvement work with children, young people, parents, carers and professionals.
Children and young people have inalienable rights, which are most clearly defined by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Reflecting the spirit of the convention, our ambition for the future is to protect, promote and respect the rights of every single child and young person in Waltham Forest. To do this, we have focussed on the four rights for all children and young people that are most important to this borough.
Every child and young person in Waltham Forest has the right to:
- Feel safe wherever they are
- Access good quality education, health and welfare services
- Shape their own future
- Be supported to fulfil their potential and become resilient
The plan has been designed so that all adults in a child’s life – parents, grandparents, wider family, community, teachers, GPs and so on – can work together to deliver these rights to our children. And under each right we have set out priorities that will guide everything we do over the next three years. In these ways we expect to make children’s rights a reality.
