Statutory review of polling station districts, polling places and polling stations

20 October to 17 November 2014

Returning Officer’s report - October 2014

As previously publicised, we are conducting a review of polling districts, places and stations within Waltham Forest. This is in accordance with Section 18 of the Representation of the People Act 1983 (as amended by Section 16 of the Electoral Administration Act 2006).

Interested parties are invited to make representations on the location of the existing voting arrangements and to make suggestions for changes. In considering any new premises for use as polling places buildings must lie within the polling district that serves the electorate for that area.

Phase one of the consultation process has now closed, and the responses have been considered by the Returning Officer. His report now forms phase two of the consultation.

This consultation period begins on Monday, 20 October 2014, and will end on Monday, 17 November 2014.

There are a range of locations that can be considered to be used as polling places; these include community centres, libraries and sports clubs. In all cases, polling stations must be accessible for disabled voters as required by the Equality Act 2010.

You can give your views by e-mail to karen.honeyball@walthamforest.gov.uk with the subject ‘Polling Station Review’, or by writing to:

Karen Honeyball
Electoral Project Manager
Electoral Services, Room 005
Waltham Forest Town Hall
Forest Road, Walthamstow
London  E17 4JF

Further details regarding the progress of the review together with the notice of decision will appear on our website following the Council meeting on the 11 of December 2014.

Any revised arrangements will come into effect for the next General Election in May 2015. Any representations made will be made available for public inspection.

Find your polling station

Your polling card will give the address of the designated station you can vote at.

You can also look up your designated polling station on My Place.

  • Add your home postcode
  • Click on the 'Places and services near me' tab
  • Your polling station is listed under the 'Voting' heading

How to vote at a polling station on election day

  • On election day, go to your local polling station. If you cannot get to the polling station you vote via a proxy vote
  • Tell the staff inside the polling station your name and address so they can check that you are on the electoral register. You can show them your poll card, but you do not need it to vote
  • The staff will give you a ballot paper listing the parties and candidates you can vote for. It will be stamped with an official mark. You may be given more than one ballot paper if there is more than one election on the same day
  • Take your ballot paper into a polling booth so that no one can see how you vote. Read the ballot paper carefully, it will tell you how to cast your vote. Do not write anything else on the paper or your vote may not be counted
  • When you have marked your vote, fold the ballot paper in half and put it in the ballot box. Do not let anyone see your vote

You can view a polling station walk through.

If you are still not sure what to do, ask the staff at the polling station to help you.

Access to polling stations for people with disabilities

We have tried to make all our polling stations accessible for electors with disabilities. Sometimes this entails using temporary ramps and different entrances to buildings.

At all times you can ask for help to gain access to the polling station. Inside each polling station are large format versions of the ballot paper. Every polling station also has a disabled polling booth which is wider and has a lower shelf than other booths.

If you have a visual impairment, you can ask for a special voting device that allows you to vote on your own in secret.
