Shared Lives (formally adult family placement) - service user information
This service provides an ordinary home environment for people with learning disabilities who need respite, short or long term care. It offers an alternative to other supported accommodation options and widens the choice for a person and their carers.
Living with another family or individual gives the person the opportunity to mix with other members of the household, meet family, friends and neighbours, and join in normal daily activities as much as they are able. It also provides the stability and support to enable people to develop their skills as well as their own friendships and interests.

Shared Lives (formally adult family placement) - becoming a carer
Who can become a carer?
People from all walks of life can become carers on the Adult Family Placement Scheme. We are particularly keen to recruit carers from ethnic backgrounds. You do not need special skills, or professional training to be a carer, all you need is a spare room and the time, patience and flexibility to get to know, and become involved with, an adult with learning disabilities.
What do carers do?
Carers are expected to involve the adult in the day-to-day life of their family and help them when required. They encourage them in their skills and interests, enabling them to lead a normal and independent life.
How long will the placements be?
Placements may be short-term (respite care), or long-term depending on the circumstances of the adult concerned.
What kind of support will be provided?
We will provide regular support and training if required. If you are a long-term carer, you will be able to have breaks from your caring role. You will also receive an allowance to cover all costs.

Everyone needs time off from the physical and mental demands of caring. If you are a carer, from time to time, it helps for both you and the person you care for to have a break. A break can be for an hour, a day, a week or more.
There are many different ways of organising a break to help with the day-to-day tasks of caring. The crucial thing is to know that the person you care for is safe.
For some carers' breaks, you need to have an assessment first with Social Services. For others, you can refer yourself to the organisations direct.
Waltham Forest Social Services can offer the following carers services:
- Respite care – residential, nursing and dementia
- Home based respite
- Take a break
- Respite grant
- Direct payments for carers
